Volunteers Carlo, Christina, Isha, Priyanka and Kevin have filled Sharana with their positive energies for the past few weeks. Carlo and Christina come from Development in Action, a volunteering organisation that sends young and enthusiastic volunteers to Sharana since our inception in 2000.

The “Awareness through sports program”: now called the “Seeds of Change program”- a name chosen by the children in Tamil, successfully completes one topic cycle: Waste. In mid-June all the schools re-opened in Pondicherry after the annual summer holidays. The children are happy to go back to school and to meet old friends and teachers. As part of their “Own a book” initiative, the Satya Special School donated almost 3000 brand-new books to Sharana, about 3 months ago. The idea of this project, was to give to the most vulnerable and destitute children, who have almost nothing to call their own- the possibility of OWNING their own books.
Most of the Sharana sponsored children who wrote their 10th and 12th exams this year, received good marks in spite of the problems they face every day at home. The Gayatri House (centre for street and slum children) has been running summer camps for the fourth consecutive week now, just like for our Sponsorship programs. During the holidays, the Gayatri House receives 100-120 children on an average every day.
We just completed our first week of the 2015 summer camps. Various activities were conducted including games, dance, art and craft activities, several child rights awareness sessions by organizations like CCRD and Childline, a special outing, and good food! Most of the children, sponsored by Sharana, live in an unstable and unsafe environment.
