Sometimes, creating lasting change is not about introducing something new, it is about helping people access the opportunities that already exist.

Last November, Sharana began its collaboration with the Ariyankuppam Post Office by organising a financial literacy and awareness program for our Women’s Social Entrepreneurship beneficiaries and the residents of Angalakuppam village. The session introduced community members to essential financial services, encouraged the use of post office savings accounts, and highlighted the government welfare schemes available to them.

Yesterday, we were happy to return for a follow-up initiative that took this journey one step further.

Along with the Ariyankuppam Post Office, we organised an insurance enrolment camp to raise awareness about the Government of India’s Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) and Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY). These low-cost insurance schemes provide accidental disability and life insurance coverage, offering families an important layer of financial protection during times of uncertainty.

We are delighted to share that 35 community members enrolled in one or both of the schemes during the camp. For many, this felt like taking a meaningful step towards greater financial security for themselves and their loved ones.

This initiative also reinforces what community development means to us. At Sharana, our role is not to replace or duplicate the support already provided through government initiatives. Rather, we work to bridge the gap between these opportunities and the communities that can benefit from them. By creating awareness, building trust, and supporting people through the enrolment process, we help ensure that valuable welfare schemes reach those they are designed to serve.
