Program
Rural Dispensary

Access to basic healthcare remains a critical need in Angalakuppam and the five surrounding villages supported by Sharana. With the nearest government health centre more than 4 kilometres away, timely medical care can be difficult to access. Limited awareness of basic healthcare, preventive care, and when to seek medical attention can further affect the health and well-being of families.

Located at Sharana’s Rural Centre in Angalakuppam, the Rural Dispensary provides accessible primary healthcare, essential medicines, preventive health support, regular health monitoring, and referrals for specialised treatment. It is open from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM every day, with extended hours until 7:00 PM on three days a week. The dispensary records more than 5,000 patient visits each year.

Managed by our health worker, Ms. Lakshmi, the dispensary provides first aid and basic treatment for common illnesses, minor injuries and insect bites, blood pressure monitoring, diabetes and hypertension monitoring, pre- and post-natal check-ups, support and follow-up for pregnant and lactating women, dressings, and wound care.

Ms. Lakshmi also provides regular follow-up care for community members with ongoing health needs, helping them continue treatment and monitor their health. Health awareness programmes and camps are organised regularly in collaboration with hospitals and medical institutions, covering preventive healthcare, maternal health, and common health concerns.

The programme also includes door-to-door medical outreach, particularly for elderly community members and those who have difficulty travelling. When a patient requires more specialised or extensive care, the case is referred to an appropriate hospital or healthcare provider. Sharana continues to stay in touch with the patient and their family, monitoring updates and supporting follow-up care to help ensure that the recommended treatment is continued.

Through these services, the Rural Dispensary supports the community with primary healthcare, basic treatment, essential medicines, maternal care, health monitoring, preventive care, health awareness, medical outreach, follow-up support, and specialised referrals.
